Department Director of Communications
With public outreach and education as the foundation of their work, the Communications Department is focused on developing and implementing strategic communication and marketing plans to support a variety of projects in accordance with state and federal public participation requirements. Through close collaboration and coordination with internal project managers, outside stakeholders, and member agencies, the team provides professional expertise for all public involvement and outreach, marketing, promotions, publicity, and media efforts to build awareness and gain support for the agency’s programs and projects including regional highway, transit, and active transportation system investments, the design and implementation of capital projects, long-range regional planning, environmental management, toll road operations and traffic-reduction initiatives, and inter-governmental coordination.
The Department Director is responsible for directing and overseeing the activities and operations of the Communications Department. Duties include coordinating assigned activities with other departments, member agencies, and external organizations; achieving the goals and objectives set by the Board of Directors and Policy Advisory Committees; representing SANDAG to outside entities and serving as the spokesperson for the organization; recommending policies and procedures regarding public and media relations, marketing, and public involvement programs; directly supervising senior level staff; and providing complex management support to the Executive Office. The Department Director is a member of the SANDAG upper management team consisting of the Executive Director, Chief Deputy Executive Director, General Counsel, and Directors of the other seven agency departments (Administration, Finance, Land Use and Transportation Planning, Mobility Management and Project Implementation, Operations, Technical Services, and TransNet).
This opportunity is for an experienced senior manager or executive; someone who can provide vision and strategic leadership for the agency as well as oversee the day-to-day administrative and operational aspects of the Communications Department
