General notes: The Center for Water and the Environment (formerly the Center for Research in Water Resources) is a research unit of the University of Texas at Austin and is located on the J.J. Pickle Research Campus in Austin, Texas. Daily work will be conducted at CWE offices, supplemented by weekly visits to the main campus for collaboration with other researchers. Occasional travel for conferences might be required. The top candidates may be asked to complete a short coding exercise.
Purpose of the position is to develop the next version of EPANET, an open source software that models the hydraulic and water quality behavior of water distribution piping systems for both major urban area and smaller communities. The core tasks include enhancements to the computational engine; extensions of software functionalities (e.g. pressure-driven network flow analysis); enhancements to the water quality calculations; improved graphical user interface; and linkage with other modeling software used by the community (e.g. GIS, CAD).
Essential functions: Adapt existing open-source code and write new code for solving flow and pressure in water distribution systems for cities. The project will be multi-language, including C++, FORTRAN, and Python. Other duties include preparing scientific papers for publication, collaboration with other scientists working on related codes in GitHub, mentoring graduate students in code and model usage, and other appropriate tasks deemed necessary by the project director.
