Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division has an opening for a Civil Engineer. The incumbent will define the problems, establish the work scope, preparing detailed calculations, design drawings, project proposals and technical reports. You will provide operational reviews of Construction Projects (Capital, Small and Maintenance Projects). This role will work on issues of diverse scope, requiring evaluation of a variety of factors, following established processes and operational policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. You will assume ownership of selected LBNL infrastructure systems assigned to the discipline and ensures safety, timely renewal and/or capacity planning for such systems. Leads project teams on studies and consultations. What You Will Do: - Subject Matter Expert for underground utilities, and civil and structural engineering of site structures and assets.
- Recommend changes to standard specifications, standard details, Engineering Group policies, design standards, CAD standards, and design procedures within the discipline.
- Maintain continuous contact with work in progress by reviewing and approving design concepts, drawings and specifications developed by subcontracted A&E firms.
- Review status of all assigned work orders and coordinates appropriate action with the Work Planning & Control Group on a timely manner.
- Resolve unusual and/or complex design problems and provides guidance for their solution.
- Provide design work that complies with applicable codes, regulations, DOE Orders, LBNL EH&S requirements, and standards adopted by the Laboratory. Maintain expert-level knowledge of these requirements and enforces them as the deputized Building Official for LBNL infrastructure systems assigned to the discipline.
- Maintain knowledge of developments in the discipline by reading technical literature; attendance at training, continuing education seminars, and technical conferences; and by contacts outside LBNL.
- Ability to conduct engineering reviews of high consequence lifts.
- Support of Building Official for LBNL jurisdiction to carry out the functions of code enforcement in the CE discipline for the Building Official.
- Recommend revisions to the LBNL facilities CE design requirements to accommodate change through the reuse of proven standards and best practices.
- Maintain and update discipline specific standard specifications.
- Provide assistance with the management of site related activities that includes underground utility systems maintenance, roadway and walkway maintenance, retaining walls movement and placement, and geotechnical reports.
Additional Responsibilities as needed: - Ability to become a Qualified Person in Fall Protection engineering.
What is Required: - A license to practice civil engineering, from the State of California Board of Professional Engineers.
- A minimum of five plus years of experience practicing as a Licensed Civil Engineer in California, or 3 plus years of Licensed Civil Engineering experience in California and a Master’s degree from an accredited university in Civil engineering.
- Expert-level knowledge of civil design principles, calculations, applications of methods, materials and the use of computers in the civil engineering disciplines.
- Proficient with AutoCAD.
- Bachelor degree from an accredited university in Civil or Architectural engineering.
Additional Desired Qualifications: - Proficient with AutoCAD Map 3D and Geographic Information Systems.
- Have supervisory experience.
