Marshall University invites applications for the position of Associate Professor/Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. We seek an outstanding researcher and educator who is a visionary leader to lead and grow the biomedical engineering department at Marshall University.
Applications are welcomed from individuals with a background in any sub-discipline of biomedical engineering. The ideal candidate must possess a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D., and have an exemplary record of achievement in research, teaching, and service at a level sufficient for appointment as a tenured Professor or Associate Professor. Candidates should have a record of effective mentorship, and a passion for facilitating the development of fellow faculty members at all levels. Candidates should also demonstrate visionary leadership, strong interpersonal skills and administrative talent, and a commitment to continued excellence and innovation in research and teaching of undergraduate and graduate students. Successful candidates must have an established history of extramural research funding, and an interest in cultivating opportunities for industrial outreach and collaboration.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering (BSBME) degree, which was established in 2018, and underwent an initial evaluation for accreditation by ABET. While the official result of this accreditation will not be known until the end of the summer, there has been no indication that it will not happen. With its growing student enrollment and established record of student success, the primary goal of the BSBME program is to prepare graduates to succeed in professional careers by providing them with the technical and analytical skills sought by employers and medical and graduate schools. To this end the BSBME program provides students specialized technical training at the interface of basic science and medical engineering. The program curriculum was jointly developed between Marshall’s College of Engineering and Computer Sciences, College of Science, and School of Medicine, and allows undergraduate students to specialize in biomechanics, biomaterials and tissue engineering, or instrumentation, signals, and imaging.
The current active research by the BME faculty involves NSF-funded nanoparticle imaging, a NASA EPSCoR-funded project testing biological cells in a microcapsule in the wind tunnel located at the NASA Langley research center, and screening molecular markers for degenerative disorders using human postmortem tissues through the nation-wide repositories of the NIH Biobank. The department has offices, classrooms, and laboratories in the Arthur Weisberg Family Applied Engineering Complex (WAEC), a 152,000 ft2 facility located next to the Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center (BBSC), a 200,000 ft2 research facility. Opportunities exist for collaboration with researchers and clinicians at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. The genomics core facility at the BBSC enables whole exome sequencing and RNA sequencing, and also provides advanced resources and technical support through the state and federal (NIH) funding.
Review of candidates will begin August 15th and will continue until the position is filled. The start date for this position is negotiable. Candidates should provide a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, statement of research and teaching interests, and full contact information for at least three references.
