The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking an outstanding, internationally recognized, and visionary scientist to build and lead a new Center for Cancer Bioengineering (CCBE) in the NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR). This position is a key component of a major initiative to establish a world-class bioengineering community dedicated to cancer in the Intramural Program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The position is equivalent to a tenured academic department chair.
The successful candidate will provide scientific and administrative leadership to build a new research center that develops and applies engineering principles to address critical problems in the detection, diagnosis, biology, and treatment of cancer. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, development of biomaterials, 3D cell and tissue engineering, immunomodulation, synthetic biology, nanoparticles, microfluidics and drug delivery.
The inaugural director of the CCBE will define overall scientific strategy and direction of the center through recruitment of junior and senior faculty. The center will be a centerpiece of a growing community of engineers at the NIH, particularly at the NCI, the NIH Clinical Center and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). The center director will have the opportunity to build engineering infrastructure within newly renovated space on our Frederick, MD campus that complements the extensive chemical, structural, imaging, biological and clinical state-of-art technologies that exist within the CCR. The successful applicant will also oversee mentoring and training activities and is responsible for ensuring an inclusive, diverse, collaborative, and healthy work environment. You will be asked to submit a statement with your application that describes specific descriptions of activities including teaching and mentoring, participation on committees or workshops addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues, and recruitment efforts aimed at DEI.
In addition to directing the CCBE, the director will also be appointed as a tenured NIH Senior Investigator and will lead their own individual world-class research program, supported by generous stable resources, including access to a wide range of NCI technology platforms and interdisciplinary collaborations within NCI, as well as at NIH and its Clinical Center.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D., M.D/Ph.D or equivalent, an established record in bioengineering, demonstrated leadership ability, proven effectiveness in mentoring and must meet the criteria for NIH tenure. This position is located at the Frederick, MD campus.
Salary will be commensurate with experience. A full civil service package of benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, and retirement) is available. Candidates may be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or eligible for a visa that will enable work in the United States. This position is subject to a background investigation.
