Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking an innovative, motivated and qualified Transportation Planner to join the Capital Projects and Traffic Engineering Division.
Primarily manages projects in Fairfax County’s Residential Traffic Administration Program, which include the Traffic Calming Program, Cut-Through Traffic Restriction Program, Through Truck Restriction Program, $200 Additional Fine for Speeding Program and the Watch for Children Program.
Responsibilities include:
Evaluating residential traffic issues for program eligibility
Managing residential traffic programs, including processing, analyzing, and reporting results and providing recommendations to Board of Supervisors’ office staffUsing Access and ArcGIS to create, issue, and evaluate qualifying public ballot packages; using ArcGIS to maintain relevant map layers, to produce project maps evaluating and updating public content for program web pages, including program maps
Managing inventory of program materials
Maintaining all program databases to ensure data is accurate and up to date
Preparing and attending public hearings, workshops, community, state and national events, and presenting information to residents, community associations, and other agencies
Preparing official items for Board of Supervisors’ consideration, and other written materials as required to successfully complete projects or assignments
Performing other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus, two years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid driver's license.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of traffic engineering and analysis
Two or more years of experience in traffic engineering or transportation planning program administration
Two years of experience in using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, database software, design software, and/or traffic analysis tools
Strong project management skills, ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments, and establish priorities
Experience in preparing and reviewing transportation or traffic analysis
Experience in coordinating with local and state government entities, including elected officials
Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong negotiation skills
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, public officials, and the general public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Job is generally sedentary in nature, however, visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment. Must communicate with others. Employee may be required to lift up to 25 pounds. Walk, bend, stand, and drive a vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
