Job Summary
The Senior Bridge Design Engineer is responsible for leading and mentoring Design Engineering staff in preparing and reviewing bridge designs, drawings, and technical specifications for replacement, reinforcement, and rehabilitation of rail carrying structures in alignment with engineering practices, approved railway standards, latest industry best practices, safety standards, and pertinent laws.
Main Responsibilities
Bridge Design
Design and lead in planning, creating, supervising, and coordinating designs for rail carrying structures across the system as assigned by Senior Manager Structures within established CN Standards
Act as a resident expert in matters concerning structural analysis, rating, and design of railway bridges, tunnels, culverts as well as building systems
Provide junior staff with training and guidance
Train and certify Design Engineers as “Railway Engineers” to meet regulatory standards
Prepare necessary information concerning Strategic Bridge Initiatives work to be outsourced to external consultants
Monitor work progress assigned to junior staff and coordinate outsourced services
Review reports produced by junior staff and consultants
Recommend the repair, strengthening, and replacement options as well as oversee the assignments
Maintain the design and drawing archives on bridge project work on the network
Support regions on complex structural issues and coordinate multi-team resources during bridge-related emergencies
Project Management
Oversee bridge design facets leading to construction activities by working closely with in-house and external resources to develop engineering drawings, construction documents, and determine project estimates
Ensure railroad project engineering and construction is completed on budget and within scope in an efficient manner
Coordinate Design and Construction group expansion initiatives involving bridges and structures
Define scope of structural work to be undertaken and assist with environmental and legal submissions
Coordinate project meetings with project stakeholders to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget
Prepare and approve proposals for the engagement of consultants on preliminary and final studies or designs on bridge replacement, repair, and strengthening projects
Prepare tender documents for material procurement and recommend award to selected fabricators
Engage quality assurance services inspections at fabrication plants and coordinate delivery of materials
Prepare and approve invoice payments to consultants, fabricators, and service providers
Technical Specification and Standard Development
Develop, review, benchmark, and update the technical specifications and tender document library to reflect current best practices as well as industry standards
Develop technical specifications for internal and external use
Develop, maintain, and revise standard bridge element designs for use on the system in alignment with The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) and industry standards
Prepare and update a standard Manual of Practice and recommendations for the bridge elements’ repair and reinforcement
Engage in multi-team exercise to develop a database for plant inventory
Material Procurement
Prepare tender documents, review submissions, and make recommendations to award procurement contracts
Coordinate and assign pool car fleet for material deliveries to site
Evaluate severity of fabrication non-conformance and recommend mitigation measures
Oversee cost database for estimating fabrication and supply of bridge components
Safety
Communicate the Company’s policies and goals to junior staff
Prepare designs adapted with safety features to alleviate injury potential
Maintain training in compliance with applicable regulations
Ensure safety rules are followed at work sites
Working Conditions
The role is performed in a combination of office (85%) and outdoor environment (15%) in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires being on call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. The role requires occasional travel (20%) within the United States (U.S.) and Canada. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Experience
Railway Bridge Engineering
Minimum 10 years of experience in railway bridge engineering
Education/Certification/Designation
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
Valid Driver’s License
Master’s Degree or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Structural Engineering*
U.S. Licensed Structural Engineer
*Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
