A structural steel estimator is responsible for accurately costing all structural steelwork associated with construction or manufacturing projects. This will involve working closely with architects, engineers, and construction managers to identify the type, quantity, and quality of steel required for each project.
Major Responsibilities/Activities:
- Prepare pricing estimates, including developing a takeoff of all material and labor required for the project. This takeoff will be combined with outside vendor pricing to produce a complete project cost estimate
- Work with outside vendors to request and receive project-specific pricing to meet firm deadlines
- Coordinate with operations and outside vendors on how the job is to be built in both our shop and in the field
- Coordinate with the customer to help ensure we are providing a complete package with a thorough understanding of the project schedule and project-specific requirements
Required Skills:
- Basic understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection practices including knowledge of structural shapes and general industry terminology
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents including design drawings and specification documents. Ability to read shop drawings a plus.
- Knowledge of estimating labor hours for projects.
- Microsoft software applications including MS Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Emphasis on the ability to manipulate Excel spreadsheets.
- Experience with PDF review/editing software (Bluebeam, Acrobat)
- Experience with Tekla Structures & Tekla EPM (Fabsuite)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to read and interpret technical and legal documents
- Strong math and geometry skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting stringent deadlines
- Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to focus on given tasks
Experience:
- 5+ years of experience with structural steel estimating
- Experience in warehouse, hospitals, retail and multi-story office buildings, across different regions
Ability to commute/relocate:
- Ennis, TX 75119: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
